Throughout the book, the author reveals details that would keep you actively engaged and connected with the story from beginning to the end. And when you think you’ve solved the mystery, surprise! There’s a plot twist that would turn around completely your point of view about everything.
I’m my opinion, choosing New York as the setting was the right choice to carry out this thriller, because it’s a city that has it all and the author knows how to take advantage of it very well. I really enjoyed reading this book and being part of Humph’s case.

‘What matters right now is this murder!’ – a new superb thriller from a master

Canadian author Wayne Clark has been around – as a journalist, a reporter, and editor, a freelance writer and translator, a copywriter, and an astute observer of life in all its permutations. He travels (all over Canada, across the pond to Germany and Holland, and down in the third American level of Mexico), he sees, probably fantasizes, a lot. Stir that pot and out comes a novelist who takes risks and makes them pan out for him. His books to date – HE & SHE, THAT WOMAN, HOLLYWOOD VIA ORCHARD STREET, VINEGAR HILL BLUES, ONE MURDER TOO MANY, and now BUSTED ON BROADWAY. Having read all of his novels, this reader can comfortably recommend Wayne’s artistic achievements!
Bringing back his now famous former cop turned PI Humphrey Barstal, Clark continues his preoccupation with New York City – this time the Broadway circuit as he places Barstal investigating murders that are all connected to Broadway. Organized crime plays a major role and colorful characters – his ‘daughter’ Eve, an actress and a makeup artist – add flavor and insight to the mystery. Clark succeeds in this territory better than other authors in this genre because of the style with which he writes. He invites us into dark places but keeps the focus on the frailty and durability of our humanity. There is much to be learned here and in the quality of fine prose and drama. Wayne Clark offers another solid novel.

Wayne Clark’s Busted on Broadway is an interesting look at the theater scene in NYC during prohibition and the Great Depression. Duffy, Humph, Eve, Rebecca and Det. Higgins are a fine ensemble of characters. The story of their uncovering the murders of Broadway actors by mob infiltration into the Actors Union was reveled like peeling back the layers of an onion. This book has it all; love, murder, friendship, humor and the idea that goofed people can overcome evil.

This novel set in New York follows Humphrey Barstal, a former cop turned PI who finds himself in trouble when some people start murdering Broadway actors for no apparent reason. To try to solve the case, he joins forces with people who know that world and soon discovers that the mafia is involved in Broadway.
Busted on Broadway by Wayne Clark is a fast-paced novel with a police fiction style. Most of it is written in dialogues, so it is easy to read but I would have liked a deeper development because I think it is a story that has a lot of potential. A Smart Detective Story Set in New York

There is no shortage of detective stories that choose New York City as their location, but a new one is always welcome. That’s what readers get with Busted on Broadway, a fun and entertaining noir adventure that features several memorable characters trying to figure out why Broadway actors are being murdered.
What the reader gets is kind of a combination of Chinatown and the latest season of Only Murders in the Building. The tone is never too serious, and there’s a playful aspect to the narrative. Everyone in this novel, from the private eye intent on solving the case to the mobsters who stalk the Big Apple’s seediest streets, seem just as eager to exchange some clever wordplay as they are to fire a gun.
The result is a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience that has more than its share of turns and twists before all of its secrets are eventually laid bare.

Mystery isn’t my primary genre but I adored and devoured the first book in the series, One Murder Too Many, I knew I wanted to read Busted on Broadway. I grew attached to Humph, Duffy and Eve so seeing where they ended up in the sequel was fun.
The story is well-written. The immersive language brings you into the story’s time period and world.
I feel Clark writes interesting character dialogue but at the same time, it feels natural. The story is not a romance but there are romantic elements. Humph’s character development combined with the makeup artist turned love interest was entertaining and well-paced. Humph isn’t just a hard-working investigator, he has a heart.
I typically read fantasy and contemporary romance and I don’t often read mystery novels but I quite enjoyed Busted on Broadway.

Verified Purchase “Busted on Broadway” by Wayne Clark offers a glimpse into the dazzling and competitive world of Broadway, but falls short of truly shining as a standout novel.
The strengths of the book lie in its portrayal of the glitz and glamour of the Broadway scene. Clark successfully creates a vivid backdrop, capturing the essence of the vibrant and dynamic environment. The setting feels authentic, providing readers with a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and intrigues that come with a career in the entertainment industry.
The characters, while not deeply nuanced, possess a certain charm that makes them relatable. The author introduces a mix of personalities, each grappling with their own ambitions and struggles. However, character development could have been more robust, as some individuals felt underexplored, leaving untapped potential for richer storytelling.
The narrative, though occasionally predictable, has its moments of intrigue and surprise. Clark weaves a tale of aspirations and setbacks, showcasing the resilience required to navigate the cutthroat world of Broadway. The pacing is generally steady, with moments of tension and drama scattered throughout the plot.
While the humor injected into the story is hit-or-miss, there are instances where it adds a lighthearted touch to the narrative. However, a more refined and consistent execution of humor would have enhanced the overall reading experience.
The writing style is serviceable, providing a clear and straightforward narrative. Yet, there are instances where the prose could benefit from more finesse and depth, especially in capturing the emotional nuances of the characters.
In conclusion, “Busted on Broadway” is a decent read for those interested in a light exploration of the theatrical world. While it may not reach the heights of a five-star masterpiece, it offers an entertaining experience with glimpses of the excitement and challenges that come with pursuing dreams on the grand stage

Busted on Broadway by Wayne Clark is a fast-paced and entertaining thriller set in the world of Broadway and show business. When former cop Humphrey Barstal discovers that a number of murders all have a common feature – namely that everyone is involved in Broadway, he makes good use of his connections in the industry. He enlists the help of a Broadway actress and a make-up artist to help him solve the case, and they soon discover that there is a dangerous mob involved in the spate of murders. This is a fun and fast read that has the added bonus of being set in a different sphere than most crime thrillers. The glamorous world of Broadway clashes with the dangers of the world of crime, gangs and thuggery in this page-turning crime novel. Wayne Clarke’s writing is suitably direct and to-the-point, although I felt that at times a little more rounding or fleshing-out would have benefited the book. Nevertheless, it is still a good choice for fans of crime fiction who are looking for something a bit different.

A recent spate of murders catches the attention of retired NY cop Humphrey (Humph) Barstal. Now a private investigator, Humph initially believes that these murders were random acts of violence. Upon further review, Humph determines that the only connection between the people murdered is that they all were Broadway actors. Due to the uniqueness of these crimes, Humph decides that a fresh approach was needed to find who was behind these killings and why these actors were targeted. Humph asks his “step-daughter” Eve, now a Broadway actor, and her best on-Broadway friend Rebecca, a makeup artist, to join his team. With their ability to question theatre owners and actors without drawing attention to themselves, they uncover enough evidence that points directly to the mob. One person stands out as the mastermind behind this plot. This story is well written and the plot moves quickly from the initial investigation of the murders to the possibility of a full-fledged threat to Broadway theatre owners and actors. The main characters are well developed, each with their own story to tell. It is an enjoyable book to read from start to finish as your interest is held throughout as Humph and his team follow many twists and turns along the way.
